The unusual world of temples, roadside shrines and solitary crosses – the 7 -day tour

These tours are the first and only offer of this kind in the midst of photographic courses offered online. They combine several aspects which are hard to find in other workshops and photographic expeditions.

They combine the art of photographing landscapes, architecture and all other aspects of photographic art that make up the photographs of forgotten historical places and objects. During the workshops, participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of techniques that ensure creation of successful pictures. A key advantage of the workshop are, however, the places and objects that will be photographed. Subsequent editions of the classes will be held in the Magura National Park, Roztocze and Podlasie.

Price: 2100 Euro/person

Minimum number of participants: 1

Including: accommodation, 3 meals/day, transport, local guides

For a group of >3 people the price can be negotiated.

Tour program:

Day 1 – Friday

Arrival of participants in Cracow, where we begin the tour. This day is also intended for the arrival and reception of participants from the airport in Cracow. Persons arriving in Warsaw are advised to take the Intercity train. In the case of a major arrival / departure discrepancy among participants, the starting time of classes on the first day will be changed. In the case of several-day workshops, their program may be modified primarily due to varying weather conditions, to which we will adjust individual days of classes.

Until 5 pm – arrival of participants

6:30 pm – 7:30 pm – dinner

7:30 pm – 9 pm – a short introduction on the topic of the workshops and presentation of photographs brought by the participants. Discussion of the key principles of photography, which will be employed during the workshops over the following days:

- Photography of landscapes, architecture and sacral objects - the most important issues

- Key techniques of composition

- Depth of field - a creative approach to the subject on various examples

- Discussion of techniques: HDR, stacking, horizontal and vertical panoramas on the example of sacral objects, architecture and landscape

- Use of sunlight or lack thereof in photography.

Depending on the weather, the theoretical part can be shortened or postponed. In varying weather conditions with sunshine we will set off for an evening photo shoot during golden hour. If weather permits, the fittest participants are invited to join me for night field trips involving crosses and roadside shrines with light painting and long exposure. The duration of the trips is to be determined.

Day 2 - Saturday - the most interesting wooden churches of southern Poland

Forgotten Jewish and Catholic cemeteries, magical Cracow – sacred photography at the Rakowicki Cemetery, vertical panorama in churches, photographing Jewish and Catholic cemeteries.

If we do not go shooting at night, we will certainly set off for the golden hour in a selected, interesting scenic location.

7 am - return for breakfast and a longer rest after the morning session,

10 am - 1 pm – taking photographs at selected locations in Cracow

1:30 pm – 3 pm – lunch

3 pm – 7 pm – documenting the first wooden churches we come across on the route southward using the techniques discussed the day before - panorama, HDR vertorama

7 pm – 8 pm – dinner

8 pm – 10 pm - sunset, golden and blue hour in a selected, interesting scenic location with sacred motifs

Day 3 – Sunday. The most interesting wooden churches of the Polish Carpathians. We begin an hour before dawn in order to capture the beautiful colors of the golden hour in the vicinity of Orthodox churches and historic cemeteries in the Beskidy Mountains

6 am - return for breakfast and a longer rest after the morning session

11 am – 12 midday – taking photographs of selected objects of small sacral architecture in the Lower Beskids., photography of solitary crosses, roadside shrines and cemeteries

12:30 – 2 pm – a photo shoot inside Orthodox churches in the Lower Beskid, search for interesting details and motifs

2 pm – 3 pm – lunch

4 pm – 6 pm - documenting solitary roadside shrines and crosses in the context of landscape photography

6 pm – 7 pm – dinner

8 pm – 10 pm - sunset, golden and blue in a selected, interesting scenic location with sacred motifs

Day 3 – Sunday

The most interesting churches and Orthodox churches of the Carpathian Mountains, sacral landscape, forgotten, abandoned villages and their monuments, cemeteries from World War I, Orthodox and Jewish cemeteries. If weather permits, we will begin with a morning field trip at dawn. The themes will include sacral landscape, small wooden architecture, forgotten remnants of old villages and places of worship, cemeteries from World War I.

Bearing in mind that this will be the third day of the workshops, everything depends on the level of our vitality.

7 am - return for breakfast and a longer rest after the morning session

11 am – 12 midday - documenting old houses and traditional households of Lemkos  - the original inhabitants of these lands

12:30 – 2 pm – Photo shoot inside selected Orthodox churches in the Lower Beskids, search for interesting details and motifs

2 pm – 3 pm – lunch

4 pm – 7 pm - documenting solitary roadside shrines and crosses in the context of landscape photography, as well as cemeteries from World War I, sunset, golden and blue in a selected, interesting scenic location with sacred motifs

7 pm – dinner and return to the accommodation quarters for the night.

Day 4 – Monday

Tour of the most interesting historical and photographic sites of the Carpathian Foothills. We will explore numerous charming places in the Subcarpathian region, with an emphasis on sacral objects and landscapes which comprise a mixture of many cultures.

Day 4 will be dedicated to a good morning restJ. We will set off after breakfast...

9 am – breakfast

10 am – 2 pm – tour of selected, interesting locations along the route to Roztocze, cemeteries, churches and wooden Orthodox churches

2 pm – lunch

3 pm – 7 pm – proceeding along the route\

7 pm – dinner

Day 5 – Tuesday

Leading themes will include roadside shrines, the sacral landscape of Roztocze on the border with Ukraine, Orthodox and Jewish cemeteries, the forgotten villages of Roztocze and Lubelszczyzna. We begin an hour before dawn in order to capture the beautiful colors of the golden hour in the vicinity of Orthodox churches, historic cemeteries and solitary roadside shrines.

9 am – breakfast

10 am – 2 pm - selected interesting locations in Roztocze - cemeteries, churches and wooden Orthodox churches

2 pm – lunch

3 pm – 7 pm - selected interesting locations in Roztocze - cemeteries, churches and wooden Orthodox churches

7 pm – dinner

Day 6 – Wednesday

Forgotten cemeteries, solitary crosses, old Orthodox churches, checkerboard of fields – the magic of Roztocze and Lubelszczyzna. Leading themes will include roadside shrines, the sacral landscape of Roztocze on the border with Ukraine, Orthodox and Jewish cemeteries, the forgotten villages of Roztocze and Lubelszczyzna.

9 am – breakfast

10 am – 2 pm - selected interesting locations in Roztocze - cemeteries, churches and wooden Orthodox churches

2 pm – lunch

3 pm – 7 pm - selected interesting locations in Roztocze - cemeteries, churches and wooden Orthodox churches

7 pm – dinner, possible night photo shoot if weather permits

Day 7 - Thursday - the land of roadside shrines and crosses, lonely guardians of fields, Jewish heritage – Western Roztocze, Janowskie Forests, Valley of Nida, return to Cracow

8 am – 9 am – breakfast

9 am – 1 pm - selected interesting locations in Roztocze - cemeteries, churches and wooden Orthodox churches along the route westward

1 pm - 2 pm – lunch

2 pm – 4 pm – transfer through the Janowskie Forests – the land of roadside shrines and crosses, Sandomierz and arrival at the valley of Nida

4 pm - until sunset - photographing interesting landscapes with roadside shrines and monuments

7 pm - dinner, return to Cracow for the night and the end of the workshops.

After the 7-day tour you will perceive the reality around you in a different way. You will learn how to produce original, atmospheric shots in seemingly uninteresting locations. You will gain knowledge about virtually all photographic techniques used in photography of landscape and architecture, and especially places with religious objects in the leading role. You will explore issues such as i.a.:

- Creating inspiring shots of architecture and landscape

- Inclusion of plant motifs in the frame

- Creative presentation of popular tourist sites

- Search for locations with high photographic value

- How not to ruin the commemorative photographs of monuments

- Selection of the best equipment for photography of landscapes, architecture and interesting sites (cameras, lenses, tripods, heads)

 - Smartphone photography  - composition and creation of proper shots

- The use of accessories (polarizing filters, graduated gray filter, graduated neutral gray filter) in practice

- HDR technique

- Shooting at different times of the day, with an emphasis on blue and golden hour

- Night photography

- Traces of stars, the milky way, painting with light

- Best camera settings for photographing landscapes and sacral objects

-Depth of field and its use in different situations outdoors and indoors

- Practical use of different techniques in the photography of sacral objects, architecture and landscape

- bracketing and HDR technique, stacking, long exposure

- Panoramic photography

- HDR horizontal and vertical panoramas of landscape and interiors of churches and cathedrals

- How to avoid creating banal shots

- Playing with sunshine while documenting landscape and interiors

- Black and white photography - from cropping to processing

- Photography of historic churches and Orthodox churches - inside and outside - creation of panoramas, search for interesting frames and details

- Photography of historic cemeteries, roadside shrines and crosses employing the knowledge of composition and different techniques, i.e. panorama, bracketing, playing with the depth of field

- Composition and perspective in landscape and architectural photography

- Correction and stacking of photographs using the aforementioned techniques.

Participants should bring several pairs of pants and one pair of extra shoes. This is not mandatory, but will certainly prove useful. At least a low level of fitness is required in order to participate in the workshops.

The majority of sites can be accessed by car; at most, we will have to walk several minutes. The organizer provides accommodation and meals.

Food catering will be provided every day as set out in the Program. Participants are required to bring their own camera and lens / lenses.

The workshop program can be slightly different than planned primarily due to varying weather conditions. Most of the remaining issues can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions section and workshop rules.

Equipment

We will make use of any focal length, ranging from fisheye and wide-angle (14-18 mm for full-frame cameras) to focal lengths of 200 mm. The necessary minimum is a varifocal 18-55 mm lens. We may not be able to use it for all the shots, but certainly for the majority. Other necessary accessories include a tripod and a release cable. Registration must be completed via the contact form. After sending application data you will receive an e-mail containing bank account details. Filling and sending the form is tantamount to accepting the workshop rules and registering for the workshops.
